Is Weed Legal in Jamaica?

What tourists need to know about possession, herb houses, smoking and travel.

The short answer

Weed is not fully legal for unrestricted recreational use. Possession of two ounces or less is decriminalized, licensed medical cannabis is legal, and Rastafarian sacramental use has specific protections.

Public smoking, unlicensed sales and carrying cannabis across Jamaica’s border remain prohibited.

The distinction that matters

Decriminalized is not the same as fully legal

2 ounces or less

Generally a non-arrestable, ticketable infraction—not unrestricted recreational legality.

J$500 ticket

A fixed-penalty notice may be issued for small possession or prohibited public smoking.

More than 2 ounces

Remains a criminal offence and can lead to arrest, prosecution and penalties.

Can tourists buy legally?

Use Jamaica’s regulated medical system

The clearest route is a licensed herb house—a regulated medical cannabis dispensary. Bring government-issued identification and any medical recommendation or supporting documentation you have.

Registration and consultation procedures can vary, so confirm current requirements directly before visiting. An informal street or beach seller is not a licensed retailer.

Where can you smoke?

Public places are off-limits

Do not smoke on a public beach, sidewalk, at a bus stop, in a restaurant or in another public place. The restriction also applies within five metres of a public place.

A resort, villa or guesthouse may impose stricter smoke-free rules. Always obtain explicit permission before smoking or vaping anywhere on the property.

Permission and respect

Private settings and Rastafarian religious use

Private use may be permitted at a non-commercial private residence or properly licensed medical cannabis smoking facility when the legal conditions and property rules are satisfied.

The law provides specific protections for Rastafarian sacramental use and registered places of worship. These are religious provisions—not a blanket tourist exemption.

Airport and border rule

Leave every cannabis product behind

Do not carry flower, pre-rolls, edibles, vape cartridges or other THC products through the airport, onto a cruise ship or across Jamaica’s border.

Purchase only through lawful channels in Jamaica, consume only where permitted, and leave all cannabis products behind—even if cannabis is legal where you live.

For a worry-free ganja vacation

Five rules visitors should remember

  • Use a licensed herb house and follow its visitor or medical-consultation process.
  • Keep possession well below two ounces; decriminalized does not mean fully legal.
  • Consume only where Jamaican law and the property’s rules both permit it.
  • Never drive after using cannabis or ride with an impaired driver.
  • Never take cannabis or THC products to an airport, cruise ship or border.

Frequently asked questions

Is recreational weed legal in Jamaica?

Not in the broad sense used in fully legalized recreational markets. Small possession is decriminalized; regulated medical and certain religious uses are legal.

How much can a tourist possess?

Two ounces or less is generally ticketable and non-arrestable. More than two ounces remains a criminal offence.

Can I smoke on a Jamaican beach?

No. Public beaches fall within public-place restrictions. Ask about lawful private or licensed spaces.

Can I buy from a beach vendor or local farmer?

An informal seller is not a licensed retailer. Use a licensed herb house for regulated products.
